The project "Petlyura’s Archeology" is a new creative intervention of the contemporary artist in the space of the historical exposition of the Museum of Moscow. The artist, collector and enthusiast of Moscow Alexander Petlyura specially invented and embodied in the museum halls a large-scale installation - his own view of the history of the country, the city and people through personal belongings and objects.
Alexander Petliura is a city legend, an outstanding figure of the Moscow artistic underground from the late 1980s and early 1990s, author of projects in Russia and abroad, exploring human life through things that were in use: clothes, shoes, household items found in abandoned houses, commission stores, flea markets. In his exhibitions and performances, things that preserve the energy of the former owner and the circumstances under which they were found are transformed by the vision and imagination of the artist. Projects Petlura - a combination of the real fate of objects and a subjective look at her artist.
"History is not only memorable dates and deeds of the great. The Moscow Museum creates a space of a story about urban identity. In the collection of Alexander Petliura there are historical rarities and things of mass production. But for us it is important that, thanks to the artist’s eye, things with their own unique history weave their voices and tell a global story about everyone, "says Alina Saprykina, director of the Moscow Museum.
With the help of costumes, shoes and other items from his collection, the artist traces the historical path of Russia through the twentieth century: from the early years of Soviet power to our time. The main method of Alexander Petliura is the transformation of the energy of the former owner of the object by the circumstances under which he was found, and the artist’s own energy and imagination. Therefore, the stylistic compositions of Petlyura’s Archeology equally belong to both the real history of Russia and the subjective view of the artist on this story.
"First, like every artist, I collected objects to draw them, and then realized that they are of some interest, that they can somehow organize, beat. In my student years, I went every evening and picked up things - one shoe, a torn suitcase... I was told: are you a fool? After all, all this was dragged into the student hostel. And for me in these subjects there is some poetry, literature, something from surrealism. These things - a reflection of life in time ", - explains the artist Alexander Petlyura.
