Spanish church painted in graffiti style Automatic translate
In the L’Hospitalet area, near Barcelona, a group of artists specializing in graffiti was invited to decorate the ceiling dome over the main altar of the local church. It was in this part of the dome that the great Michelangelo liked to place his frescoes.
The church of Santa Eulalia is built in neo-Romanesque style and is considered one of the attractions of Catalonia. Inside the temple has a very ascetic decoration. The walls are painted in a nondescript color, the statues of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the saints are very simple and have no decorations. To compensate for this, Father Ramon Borr decided to paint the main dome, but in a slightly different way than usual.
The priest said that painting in graffiti style is his own idea.
“Despite the fact that society is often shocked by the actions of graffiti artists,” he said, “for me graffiti is just another artistic device.”
The result was impressive - a rich palette, bright red and green colors, the dominant image of the main shrine. But do not think that painting is like street art. In fact, the authors of the work managed to observe the Romanesque style of the picture, with a static, two-dimensional image of St. Eulalia, the Virgin and baby Jesus. Before young graffiti artists set about painting, they, at the insistence of the priest, visited the museums of Barcelona to study the characteristics of the Romanesque style. “And they went and studied, even read several books,” says father Ramon.
One of the two graffiteros, Raul Sanchez, admitted that when Father Borr hired him, he was surprised and delighted, but at the same time he was very excited about the work ahead.
“Only a professional artist will determine that we used spray paints to do the job,” he said in an interview. “We tried to hide it, because in the Roman period, obviously, such colors did not exist.”
To write one of the women surrounding the Virgin and Jesus, the artist used the image of his grandmother. Now, according to him, she miraculously recovered from a serious illness from which she had suffered since 1950.
Father Borr noted that Pope Benedict XVI once stated that art should attract believers to temples. And the unusual painting of the dome of the church is already famous among the locals who have shown very benevolent interest in it.
