The Museum of the History of Religion has opened an exhibition of Bible illustrations by artist He Ki Automatic translate
ST. PETERSBURG. On August 18th, a unique exhibition was opened at the Museum of the History of Religion, where you can get acquainted with the work of artist He Ki, who was born in China but has lived in the United States for many years. In his works, the artist uses biblical subjects, but when creating his works he combines the style characteristic of the Chinese folklore traditions of writing with the achievements of modern graphic technologies.
His work is done in a technique called "giclee". Using this technique, works created with the help of digital art printing are complemented by the author’s “drafting”. They look like traditional graphics, but when they are created, there is no need for the manual manufacture of printing plates.
For the first time, works in the Giclee technique were presented at an exhibition held in 2001 in New York. Today, exhibitions made up of digital prints are available in many American museums, including one as prestigious as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exposition, housed in the Museum of the History of Religion, houses 33 works by Hye Ki, which use the most famous biblical subjects. Especially often the theme of the artist’s works is the central plot of the Bible, which describes the Resurrection of Christ and His appearance to his disciples. The main characters of the Old Testament books are also on display.
It is interesting that such a theme in the work of Hye Ki and the style of his works did not appear by chance. During the “Cultural Revolution,” the artist was sent to the province, where he painted posters, and at night he copied a reproduction from Raphael’s painting “Madonna and Child”, which accidentally fell into his hands. At the end of the “revolution”, He KI became a student at an art institute in Nanjing. In the USA, the artist lives since 2004.
