ST. PETERSBURG. In the Stroganov Palace, which is a branch of the Russian Museum, on May 21 opened an exhibition of Alexander Agabekov, a famous St. Petersburg artist. His first exhibition at the Russian Museum was held in 2001. After almost a decade and a half, the new exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to get acquainted with the main stages of development of the artist’s creativity over the past time.
The exhibition space of the Stroganov Palace housed more than 130 works by Alexander Agabekov, created by him, starting in 1960. Some of them were delivered to the exhibition from the personal collection of Alexander Surenovich, some were stored in the collection of the Russian Museum.
In the sixties, the artist created a series of lithographs, thanks to which he received recognition from colleagues and spectators. Lyricism of plots, purity of color, clear silhouettes of figures and monumentality of form were characteristic of them. The manner in which his works were performed became recognizable.
In his further searches, the master strengthened the decorativeness of the brightness of the color palette, and enriched the usual subjects with emotional shades. Each of the motifs appearing in the artist’s new works was attracted by the simplicity of his figurative solution, the capacity and integrity of the work inherent in the works of folk artists.
The thirst for experiments, characteristic of Alexander Agabekov, is accompanied by the artist’s respect for traditions. Therefore, his work is characterized by the highest craftsmanship. This allows the works performed by the artist to be distinguished by sophistication and decorative expressiveness, regardless of the genre in which they were created.
The exhibition, which opened with the support of the participants of the “Free Artists of St. Petersburg” project, runs until July 20.
