ST. PETERSBURG. In the exhibition halls located on the third floor of the Courtyard gallery, related to the General Staff building, State Hermitage Museum May 25th presented to visitors one of the main exhibitions of this year. The exposition of the exhibition “Against the World…” consists of works by German twentieth-century modernist artists, brought together in a single collection by collector George Econom.
The foundation of this collection was laid in the early nineties, when George Ekonoma began to acquire the works of artists who created their works immediately after the World War. He found paintings at prestigious auctions around the world, as well as from gallery owners in Europe. The result of his gathering was the largest collection of paintings and drawings created by artists who declared themselves in the 20s.
The Economa collection also includes works by contemporary German artists, some of which are also included in the exhibition. Art lovers will be able to get acquainted with the works of famous expressionists representing the style of German art between the two wars - these are Ernst Kirchner and Georg Gross.
The works of artists supporting the artistic movement “new materiality” are also presented, shocking the audience with the brutal cynicism of their works and their overt erotica. These areas of painting were persecuted by the authorities, many paintings were destroyed. However, some time later, in the seventies of the last century, artists appeared in Germany who continued to work in the style of their predecessors. The exhibition includes works by neo-expressionists, as well as “new wilds”.
The “Against the World” exhibition, which presents the history of German modernism, will be open for seven months.
