Valery Kapterev left a deep mark in the art of the twentieth century. His life began in 1900, and came to an end in 1981. His main passion has always been color, so the exhibition can serve as a great example of working with color, the interaction of shades. Most clearly, his talent as a colorist was revealed in a series of works devoted to the East, its philosophy, nature, and people.

The artist during his life led a fairly active lifestyle. Being a student and friend of the artist A.V. Shevchenko, who formulated the thesis that for the artist paints and colors are magic tools that give him an impulse to creativity. In 1919, Valery Kapterev took part in organizing the large-scale exhibition Tsvetodinamos and Tectonic Primitivism. At different periods of his life, he was a member of such associations of artists as the "Workshop of Painters", "Society of Moscow Artists", "Genesis".

Many of his works before the war were destroyed. The two surviving ones - “The Old City” and “Night Still Life” are stored in the Tretyakov Gallery.

A characteristic feature of his work is the lack of a clear line between reality and imagination. The artist loved to draw "internal portraits" of people, creating a picture of the human soul. For example, instead of the usual face image, he could draw a bouquet of tulips or an old toy. And the man, thinking, said: "Indeed, it’s me!"

He was a welcoming host, so young artists often gathered in his house, who took lessons from freedom and eternal youth from Kapterev!
