MOSCOW. The Pushkin Museum. Pushkin continues the landmark project for the museum - "The exhibition of one painting." From March 25th, museum visitors will be able to see the canvas created by the court artist Agnolo Bronzino. This painting, depicting the famous navigator and commander Andrea Doria, represented in the image of Neptune, was commissioned by collector Paolo Giovio, who set himself the goal of collecting portraits of military leaders who were his contemporaries as well as ancient heroes in his residence.
Before taking the place assigned to him in the museum hall, a portrait of the famous admiral who lived in the 16th century was at the Italian Embassy, located in an old mansion, for a week. For a week, art lovers have been waiting for a meeting with a masterpiece painted by a talented portrait painter from Florence, whose works are not very well known in Russia.
In an interview with reporters, Victoria Markova, who is the curator of the exhibition, told some facts from the biography of the artist Bronzino, known not only as a painter. He wrote talented poems, was interested in history, and studied the work of Michelangelo, who was his idol. His passion for the work of the famous Master is noticeable in the portrait of Andrea Doria.
The hero is depicted naked, as classical classical traditions demanded, because the admiral is represented in the form of the god of the seas and oceans. The lower part of his body is shrouded in a sail, he stands at the mast, holding a trident, and his pose resembles the famous David, a copy of which is located in the Italian courtyard of the Pushkin Museum.
It is interesting that if in most of the works the artist is characterized by an extremely accurate depiction of details of clothing, then in this painting Bronzino expressed the admiral’s character in the beauty and power of his figure.
The masterpiece is available to the public on April 22nd.
