Painter: Peter Paul Rubens
The painting Madonna and Child by Peter Paul Rubens depicts the image of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms. The depiction of holy people is always referred to as a religious subject. Yet here we do not see any reference to the scriptures of the Bible. We can say that we are facing a domestic scene: the mother and her child went out for a walk in the garden. This way of representing Our Lady and Jesus draws these saints closer to us, makes them earthly, understandable and accessible to all people. At the center of the canvas is the Madonna.
Description of Peter Rubens’ painting "Madonna and Child
The painting Madonna and Child by Peter Paul Rubens depicts the image of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms. The depiction of holy people is always referred to as a religious subject. Yet here we do not see any reference to the scriptures of the Bible. We can say that we are facing a domestic scene: the mother and her child went out for a walk in the garden. This way of representing Our Lady and Jesus draws these saints closer to us, makes them earthly, understandable and accessible to all people.
At the center of the canvas is the Madonna. The artist decided to depict a woman more understandable to him and to the European man. We do not see here the tanned skin and dark hair, which are typical of the people of the places where Mary lived. Jesus is also depicted as light-skinned. The color of the child’s hair is very close to gold, indicating that the baby is exceptional.
Mary has light-blond hair. Some of the curls are braided at the back of her head into a braid, with a few strands falling down on the girl’s shoulders. She seems a bit disheveled, young, as if she had just returned from a walk. The girl is wearing a red silk dress, as a symbol of the blood that will later be shed by her son. On top of the dress is a large blue cloak that also serves as a veil for the child. One of her breasts is bare - she has just fed her son.
Jesus is depicted without clothes, but Mary tries to wrap him in a thin, lacy, snow-white cloth. The child is not a newborn; he is over a year old. He is holding several plucked cornflowers in his hands. Mary is depicted calm, peaceful. Her lips curve into a slight smile - she is admiring her son. Jesus is also happy: his mother took him outside for a walk and fed him.
In the background of the work is a small forest with tall trees. Right next to Mary, a tea rose bush is blossoming. The delicate, fragrant buds give the work a freshness and represent the youth of Our Lady.
