Kuindzhi was able to bring back the landscape’s unusual beauty and sense of the world’s splendor. The Itinerants sought to explore everything, while the artist wanted to enjoy what was there. But he could not avoid interpretation altogether. He conceptualized nature as part of the forces of the cosmos, which can carry beauty. Quindzhi was constantly looking for the image of the world in reality.
Description of Arkhip Kuindzhi’s painting "Daryal Gorge".
He also sought it when he looked at the majestic mountains of the Caucasus. On his canvas they are illuminated by the mysterious moon. One gets the impression that this lighting is something special, absolutely unearthly.
Kuindzhi uses intense color, which allows the tops of the mountains and rivers to shine, as if they were painted with phosphorescent tones. We see a mysterious country that is capable of evoking visions full of romanticism and equally wonderful dreams.
The artist first went to the Caucasus in 1888. Here he met with the most amazing phenomenon, which became a good foreshadowing of the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes. Quindzhi saw a very interesting phenomenon - on the surface of the cloud reflected his figure in an enlarged size.
The mountains are depicted with the greatest pathos. They are absolutely inaccessible, but attract people to them. There is an irresistible desire to know something mysterious. It is this that becomes the symbol of a world that is very beautiful, but completely unattainable.
On the one hand, Quindzhi’s mountains are as realistic as possible, but at the same time one feels a special fascination of the artist from the contemplation of the world. The earthly and the planetary merge in the universe. They become one whole. The human soul is filled with the greatness of the world with a special sound. The earthly is purified by the eternal. In this way it becomes truly special and unbelievably too.
The very colors used by the artist are dark enough. But it is they that give the whole canvas a special sound of true splendor.
