In this painting, Flagellation of Christ (workshop), we see a depiction of the biblical event where Jesus is scourged. Christ stands at the center, bound to a column, his body muscular and serene despite his suffering. His face is turned slightly forward, with a halo of red rays above his head, signifying his divinity.
On Christs left stands a muscular man with a dark beard, wearing a white tunic and dark trousers, with a gold sash. He holds a whip in his right hand, poised as if to strike, and his left hand rests on Christs shoulder.
On Christs right stands another man with long, curly brown hair, dressed in a pink tunic and dark, high boots. He is in the act of striking Christ with a whip, his arm raised and bent. His expression is intense and perhaps even cruel.
The figures are set against a background of architectural elements, including a fluted column and a dark, panel-like structure. The floor is a pale pink, with geometric lines suggesting a tiled surface.
The subtexts of this painting are deeply rooted in Christian theology and artistic tradition.
