V. E. Makovsky
Girl with Geese
1875
In the work of Vladimir Yegorovich Makovsky, motifs of a lyrical and bright perception of folk life found their embodiment. The small painting Girl with Geese in the Field, painted in 1875, belongs to a series of paintings dedicated to the lives of peasant children. Creating childhood images with great love and warmth, the artist saw his task as revealing a peculiar poetry of everyday life and the beauty of folk customs in an ordinary situation. The liveliness and accuracy of Makovskys works lay in his ability to capture the moment, which then became the basis of the plot. A painting is not just a word, the artist often said, it captures one minute, and within that minute must be everything; if it lacks that, there is no painting.
The scene, full of subtle observations, is written by Makovsky with great expressiveness: both the rural landscape and the heroine herself – an adorable girl in her sincerity, tending to birds. The portrait basis of the image is undeniable, although, most likely, it is somewhat idealized. The figure of the girl, brought closer to the foreground, looks significant against the backdrop of a transparently blue summer sky. The artist carefully examines her pleasant, slightly pensive face and the details of her costume.
In the painting, one can see the evolution of Makovskys creative method: from a restrained manner to a more free-flowing style, from detailed narration to artistic generalization and emotional freedom, from coloristic isolation of figures and objects to color unity. With its imagery and bright lyrical mood, the work echoes the portrait and genre painting of V. A. Tropinin, from whom Makovsky received his first professional lessons.
The characteristic scene from the lives of peasant children is simple and natural, but it is not a naive copying from nature in the style of artists-realists of the 1850s-1860s: this painting contains the authors attitude towards the model. The informality of the composition and its fragmentary nature immerse the viewer in the emotional atmosphere of the work, creating a sense of presence. The artists deep sympathy and respect for ordinary people are conveyed to the viewer. And the pictorial intonation remarkably accurately coincides with the depicted scene: the author brightens the palette, strives to convey light and air, the naturalness of the colors of nature. And in the painting sounds a clear, healing melody that brings peace of mind.

In the background, two white geese stand alert, their necks extended, while a third goose in the foreground appears to be grazing or perhaps playfully nipping at the grass. The overall atmosphere is serene and idyllic, capturing a snapshot of rural life and the gentle harmony between humanity and nature.
The subtexts in the painting can be interpreted in several ways. The girls attire, particularly the flower crown and the collection of wildflowers, evokes themes of youth, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life, often associated with summer and the abundance of nature. The presence of the geese could symbolize a connection to the earth, domesticity, and the simple routines of country living. Her contemplative pose and distant gaze might suggest inner thoughts, dreams, or a deeper understanding of the world around her, hinting at the transition from girlhood to womanhood. The painting could also be seen as a representation of simple joys, the beauty found in ordinary moments, and the peaceful coexistence with the natural world.
