Description of Ivan Shishkin’s painting "Rain in an Oak Forest".
Painted in 1891, during Shishkin’s creative prime, Rain in an Oak Forest is elaborate and is probably one of the author’s most impeccable, stunning works and resembles a quality photograph.
The canvas depicts an oak grove, through which many people pass through the path. It is a warm summer rain, and the air in the forest is fresh and cool. A man and a woman, a married couple, are strolling leisurely under an umbrella, and a little ahead of them is a man, most likely the author of the painting, who, feeling the drops of rain on himself, opens the umbrella. Accuracy in details, traditional for the artist’s landscapes, reaches the highest level in this painting: the entire depth of the grove space is conveyed to the maximum extent possible through the difference between clear-cut trees in front of us and blurred trees in the background, which lose color as they move deeper into the grove and merge with the silvery gray mist.
The rain is summer, mushrooming. We draw this conclusion from the richness of the colors in the tree foliage and grass. If you look closely you can see how a ray of sunlight breaks through the rainy veil and lights up every pebble and blade of grass, is reflected by rays in puddles and creates golden halos on tree trunks in the distance, and close up - small highlights on every leaf on which it hits.
In contrast to the somewhat harsh paintings that Shishkin painted in the last years of his life, in "Rain in the Oak Forest" he enjoys all the variety and beauty of the world around him and invites the viewer to dive into this summer landscape, forgetting about all the problems and hardships of life. All this lightness and charm of the picture is achieved by great skill of its author. In it he revealed all his creative potential, masterly conveying all the subtleties, the play of light and shadow, as well as the whole palette of shades of the summer grove during the rain.

На мой взгляд, фигуры людей, дают целостность композиции. Сознание человека сразу ухватывает эти фигуры и закрепляет внимание в пространстве, перспективе. Но маленькое деревце, возле камня и лужици воздействует на подсознание, незримо для смотрящего, вводя его в острое ощщущение присутствия.

Under an umbrella, a man and a woman – a married couple – stroll leisurely, while a man walks slightly ahead; he is likely the artist himself, who, feeling the raindrops on him, opens his umbrella. The traditional accuracy of detail characteristic of the artists landscapes reaches its highest level in this painting: the entire depth of the grove is conveyed through the difference between the clear trees in front and the blurred ones in the background, which lose color as they recede into the depths of the forest, merging with the silvery-gray haze.
