The foreground is occupied by two figures riding atop a large, dark horse. The pair are seated upon what appears to be a decorated saddle blanket and are adorned in festive attire – hats with pom-poms and cloaks that evoke the spirit of celebration. Notably, the horse itself seems to be sprouting wings, further enhancing the fantastical nature of the scene. A sled, pulled by a rope extending from the horse, carries two more figures, also similarly dressed, who hold a wreath bearing the inscription Merry Christmas.
The painting’s subtexts are complex and potentially contradictory. The juxtaposition of maritime imagery – the ship and lighthouse – with airborne elements – the balloons and winged horse – creates an atmosphere that is both grounded in reality and imbued with dreamlike qualities. The presence of the American flag suggests a nationalistic element, while the overall festive tone points towards celebration and goodwill.
The figures’ attire and the explicit Merry Christmas inscription firmly establish the works association with holiday traditions. However, the unusual mode of transportation – a winged horse carrying passengers across a snowy landscape – introduces an element of absurdity that undermines any straightforward interpretation of conventional festivity. The scene seems to be less about literal representation and more about conveying a sense of joyous, albeit unconventional, celebration. It is possible to interpret this as a commentary on the desire for escape or transcendence during a season often associated with familial obligations and societal expectations.
