At the apex of the visual field, we observe hands gripping a cross. These are not presented as reverent or protective; rather, they appear to be holding the cross at arms length, almost defensively, suggesting a struggle or an attempt to ward off something unseen. The figure attached to these hands is only partially visible, clad in what appears to be dark clothing, hinting at a concealed identity or perhaps a conflicted role.
Below this, a bird – likely a raven – is depicted with its beak open in a harsh cry. Its form is rendered with loose brushstrokes, contributing to an atmosphere of agitation and foreboding. The placement of the raven immediately beneath the cross suggests a symbolic confrontation between faith and darkness, or perhaps a mocking of religious iconography.
The lowest section features a human face, seemingly female, contorted in distress. A prominent flow of liquid – presumably blood – emanates from her mouth, creating a visceral and disturbing focal point. The figure’s hair is rendered with energetic strokes, adding to the sense of turmoil. This element introduces themes of suffering, vulnerability, and potential sacrifice.
The use of red as a dominant color throughout the work amplifies the intensity of these themes. It evokes associations with violence, passion, and spiritual crisis. The stark contrast between the white background and the dark hues further heightens the dramatic tension.
The fragmented nature of the imagery – the partial visibility of figures, the loose brushwork, the layering of elements – creates a sense of disorientation and unease. This technique prevents a straightforward narrative interpretation, instead inviting viewers to engage with the symbolic weight of each element and their interplay. The work seems to explore themes of faith versus doubt, innocence versus corruption, and the enduring power of darkness.
