The middle register shifts the focus to movement and transportation. A dark carriage, pulled by a black horse, traverses a blurred landscape. The indistinctness of the surroundings suggests a journey into the unknown, or perhaps a flight from something terrible. The carriage itself evokes associations with secrecy and clandestine activity; it is a vehicle for hidden agendas and potentially sinister purposes. The monochromatic tones in this section – primarily blacks, grays, and browns – contrast sharply with the vibrancy of the upper panel, creating a visual separation between immediate violence and an ongoing, unsettling progression.
The lowest register introduces a sense of isolation and confrontation. A figure, again resembling a man, stands at the edge of a deep pit or chasm. The light emanating from within illuminates a cross planted in the ground, surrounded by what appears to be scattered earth and debris – possibly indicating a recent disturbance or struggle. The figure’s posture suggests a mixture of apprehension and defiance; he seems both trapped and resolute. This final panel implies a reckoning, a confrontation with something ancient and powerful, perhaps even a symbolic descent into darkness.
Throughout the entire work, the use of watercolor lends an ethereal quality to the scene, softening the edges of the figures and blurring the boundaries between reality and nightmare. The deliberate inclusion of torn borders around each register further contributes to the feeling of fragmentation and instability, as if the narrative itself is fractured or incomplete. Subtly, a sense of powerlessness pervades; the individuals depicted appear to be caught in forces beyond their control, struggling against an unseen threat that looms large over their existence.
