This assemblage appears to be the focal point of the work. It incorporates elements reminiscent of African tribal masks and iconography, alongside scientific instruments – a test tube containing a swirling substance, what looks like a pipette, and other laboratory apparatus. The juxtaposition of these disparate objects suggests a merging of ancient traditions with contemporary science or perhaps an exploration of cultural heritage through a modern lens.
To the left of the central figure, a falcon is depicted, its plumage rendered in meticulous detail. A feather, adorned with a peacock eye, extends from the bird’s head towards the female figure, creating a visual connection between them and potentially symbolizing communication or divine inspiration. The falcon itself carries an elaborate headdress that echoes the patterns found on the mask-like object held by the woman.
The lower portion of the composition features a stylized drum, upon which rests a carved wooden sculpture resembling a human face – another iteration of the African mask motif. This element grounds the image and provides a sense of ritualistic or ceremonial significance.
The overall effect is one of rich symbolism and layered meaning. The artist seems to be exploring themes of cultural identity, scientific progress, communication, and perhaps even spirituality. The use of vibrant colors against the cool blue background creates visual interest and enhances the symbolic weight of each element. Theres a sense of mystery surrounding the central figure and her actions; she appears both powerful and contemplative, acting as an intermediary between ancient wisdom and modern inquiry.
