The artist employed a limited palette, relying on variations within these core hues to establish depth and form. The blues range from deep indigo to lighter cerulean tones, while the oranges shift between vibrant cadmium and more muted ochre. These color choices contribute to an overall feeling of intensity and perhaps even a sense of heat or aridness.
The application of paint appears deliberate yet somewhat rough; brushstrokes are visible, adding texture and contributing to the fragmented quality of the scene. The lower portion of the painting is characterized by darker tones – browns and blacks – that ground the composition and create a visual base for the elevated forms above. A band of pale yellow-orange cuts diagonally across this dark area, introducing another layer of complexity and drawing the eye upward.
The absence of any discernible horizon line or atmospheric perspective further emphasizes the painting’s non-representational nature. It is not an attempt to depict a specific place but rather to convey a feeling or impression through color and form. The sharp angles and contrasting colors suggest a sense of drama, perhaps even conflict, while the overall composition evokes a feeling of vastness and isolation.
Subtly, there’s a suggestion of geological forces at play – the angular shapes could be interpreted as evidence of erosion or tectonic activity. The painting might then be read as an exploration of natural processes and the enduring power of the landscape, stripped down to its essential elements.
