The middle ground is defined by a series of angular, sharply delineated slopes transitioning from ochre and olive greens to deeper blue-greens. These forms are not naturalistic; instead, they are simplified into geometric shapes that emphasize their structural qualities. The artist has employed a limited palette, primarily consisting of blues, whites, yellows, and greens, which contributes to the painting’s overall coolness and austerity.
The mountain range itself dominates the upper portion of the canvas. Its peaks are rendered in a pale, almost luminous white, sharply contrasting with the darker tones of the surrounding landscape. The artist has avoided any sense of atmospheric perspective; instead, each form is presented as if existing on a flat plane, reinforcing the painting’s stylized and somewhat abstract nature.
The absence of human presence or signs of life contributes to an atmosphere of remote grandeur and isolation. The starkness of the scene suggests themes of immutability, the power of nature, and perhaps even a sense of melancholy or awe in the face of such immense scale. The deliberate simplification of forms could be interpreted as an attempt to convey not merely a visual representation of the landscape but also its underlying essence – a distilled expression of geological time and enduring natural forces.
The dark border surrounding the image creates a framing effect, further isolating the depicted scene and intensifying its sense of otherness.
