The painting depicts two nude young women in a lush, ancient-looking courtyard with a fountain. One woman, with reddish-blonde hair and a serene expression, is seated on the edge of a pool, reaching out with one hand towards the water. Water cascades from a decorative spout held by another figure (partially obscured by foliage) in the upper-left of the frame, and she is catching it in her cupped hand. The other woman, with darker hair pulled back and a red band around her forehead, is kneeling in the water, looking up at her companion. Her body is turned away from the viewer, with her back muscles clearly defined as she moves.
The setting is rich with detail: classical architectural elements like columns and arches, as well as decorative sculptures and gargoyle-like spouts from which water flows. Lush green foliage drapes from above, creating a sense of an idyllic, verdant retreat. A dark blue cloth is draped around the seated womans legs.
