The subtexts of the painting can be interpreted in several ways. Dona Isabel was the second wife of Andrés del Peral, and its believed that Goya painted this portrait for her husband. The way she is dressed, particularly the lace veil, suggests modesty and possibly a connection to Spanish traditions. However, her pose and her direct, yet averted gaze, can also be interpreted as conveying a sense of self-possession and perhaps even defiance. The contrast between the dark, textured fabric of her shawl and the pale, smooth skin of her face and hands highlights her beauty and vulnerability. Some art historians have noted a certain sensuality in the rendering of her décolletage, which might suggest a duality in her character or public perception. Furthermore, the paintings intimacy, achieved through its close framing and the subdued lighting, invites the viewer to contemplate the inner world of the sitter.
