Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings cannot be confused with others. His works make a strong and unforgettable impression. Far from academic classical painting and, obviously, from works in the Impressionist style, the artist’s paintings are full of vitality and aggressive bright colors. He created most of his paintings and iconic masterpieces between 1889 and 1890. At the time, Van Gogh was being treated in a hospital for the mentally ill near the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It may sound strange, but most experts mark it as the heyday of the artist’s creativity. In April 1890, the artist painted several variations of still life with irises.

It may sound strange, but most experts mark it as the heyday of the artist’s creativity.
In April 1890, the artist painted several variations of still life with irises. Among the many canvases stands out the painting "Still Life Vase with Irises on a Yellow Background," admiring the brightness and expressiveness of the colors. The lush bouquet is placed on a bright yellow background, creating the necessary contrast. This combination of opposite shades allows you to convey the colorfulness of the petals. Besides, this technique intensifies the saturation of colorful tonality of the picture. Composition is built in such a way as to emphasize the contrasting consonance of colors. The artist doesn’t concentrate on details, it’s obvious that he lacks shadow modeling.
The manner of performance can be compared to Japanese art. The brush is constantly moving, molding and forming the most delicate petals. The color palette plays with a variety of shades, without prioritizing the blue palette. Van Gogh favors a black outline in highlighting the bright blue irises. White strokes trace the depth and relief of the ornate inflorescences.
The technique of impasto, a juicy layer of paint, is evident. And, again, this, as well as the deep contrast, does not weigh down the image. The painting is imbued with tenderness and lyricism. Carefully and lovingly written out with soft wave-like movements, the petals breathe "life", although their tips are already affected by fading.
