The painting Vase with Zinnias by Vincent van Gogh is a vibrant still life that captures a bouquet of zinnias in a glassy green vase. The flowers are depicted in a riot of warm colors, including oranges, yellows, reds, and touches of white and blue, creating a lively and energetic composition. Van Goghs characteristic impasto technique, with thick, visible brushstrokes, adds texture and a sense of movement to the petals and foliage.
The background is dark and moody, with deep reds and blacks, which serves to make the brightly colored flowers pop forward and assert their presence. The foreground, a surface that appears to be a tablecloth or table, is rendered in similar warm, textural strokes of red and orange.
