Flanking Mary are two male figures, identified as saints by their halos. The figure to the left is dressed in ecclesiastical vestments – a bishop’s mitre and flowing white robes trimmed with crimson – and holds an open book, signifying his role as a scholar or teacher within the Church. His beard and aged appearance convey wisdom and authority. To the right stands another saint, clad in a monastic habit of cream and blue, also holding an open book. The younger face and more slender build distinguish him from the older figure on the left.
The background is divided into two horizontal zones. Above the figures, a red curtain hangs behind Mary, creating a sense of depth and emphasizing her importance within the scene. Below, a pale green band provides a neutral backdrop against which the figures are set. The color palette is restrained, dominated by earthy tones – reds, browns, creams, and greens – which contribute to an overall atmosphere of solemnity and piety.
Subtly, the arrangement suggests hierarchical relationships within the religious sphere. Mary’s central placement and the childs direct gaze establish her as the focal point of devotion. The flanking saints, each holding a book, imply their roles as intermediaries between the divine and humanity, offering knowledge and guidance. The architectural niche itself reinforces this sense of sacred space, elevating the figures beyond the everyday world. The simplicity of the composition and the lack of elaborate ornamentation suggest an emphasis on spiritual contemplation rather than ostentatious display.
