In the painting March by I. I. Levitan, we see early spring, March. We see a corner of a house, a horse harnessed to a sleigh, trees, snowdrifts, and a dirty, rutted road. It seems like everything is quite ordinary, but it fills the soul with joy and freshness.
This painting is full of movement: the little horse, which seems to be shifting its weight from one foot to another, the trees swaying slightly in the light breeze. There are also many sounds in the painting. You can hear the creaking of floorboards under someones feet inside the house. Melted snow drips from the roof, and when the little horse shifts its weight, there is a faint crunching sound. You can smell the forest, or rather the pine needles, the scent of the village, the horse, and the fresh air.
In this painting, there is a motif of anticipation. The little horse seems to be waiting for someone. The birdhouse awaits its inhabitants, the swallows. Everything anticipates the arrival of spring and warmth. And it seems that when spring arrives, everything will come to life.
In I. I. Levitans painting March, I sense the presence of a person. This is suggested by the carelessly open door, the shutters on the first floor being left ajar, and the horse left harnessed to the sleigh. The presence of a person is also indicated by the path leading into the forest and the trampled, dirty road.
There is a lot of white in the painting, which represents the snow, but in some places it is slightly darker, and in others it is completely gray from melting. Trees are depicted in green. The branches of the birch trees are yellow-brown. Some areas are darker, while others are lighter. The sky is azure blue without a single cloud. Shadows are depicted in almost violet tones.
In this painting, although it is not autumn, there is a huge amount of yellow colors. This is how the artist conveys sunlight. Although the sun is not visible, everything is permeated by its rays.
The snow in the painting March is bluish, with yellowish spots, and blue or even violet in the shadows. The snow is trampled, with many footprints. It is covered with a crust, a layer of ice. The snow in the painting has a textured surface; I would say its even porous. There are many trees in the painting. You can see that the buds on the trees have just begun to swell. The branches of the birch trees resemble cobwebs because they are almost transparent. The transparency of the branches gives the painting an airy, even carefree quality.
In the right part of the painting, there is a section of the house. It has a yellowish tint from the sun. A pile of snow lies on the roof of the porch, as if nibbled by the sun.
The road is rutted, with puddles and melting snow. It is dirty and sprinkled with sand or straw. The road curves behind a snowdrift.
The horse stands right next to the porch. This is a simple, village horse, accustomed to work. It is waiting for its owner, who will either unharness it or take it somewhere, as it is harnessed to a sleigh.
This beautiful painting can be seen in Moscow at the State Tretyakov Gallery. When I look at I. I. Levitans painting March, I feel that winter is coming to an end and that spring will soon arrive. Looking at this painting, I want to go to the forest, to the dacha. I want it to be summer soon, when its warm and the sun shines.
картина просто прелесть!!!
картина хорошая но училки бесят
You cannot comment Why?
In the foreground, a solitary horse is harnessed to a plowing implement, its form rendered with earthy tones against the stark white snow and brown earth. The horse appears to be working, perhaps preparing the soil for a new season, a clear indication of the shift from winter to spring. To the right, a yellow wooden building stands, its roof adorned with a significant patch of snow, further emphasizing the melting season. Beside the building, a yellow bundle, possibly hay or straw, rests in the snow, hinting at the practicalities of rural life.
The subtext of this painting lies in its powerful evocation of change and renewal. The title March immediately signals the theme of a new beginning, a departure from the harshness of winter and the anticipation of warmer days. The interplay of snow and bare earth symbolizes the struggle between the old and the new, the fading of winter and the emerging life of spring. The solitary horse engaged in labor represents the effort and hard work required to usher in this new season, a testament to human perseverance and a harmonious relationship with nature. The bright sunlight, casting long shadows across the snow, further enhances the feeling of transition and optimism, suggesting a hopeful outlook for the coming spring. The painting captures a quiet, introspective moment, a subtle but profound celebration of natures cyclical rebirth.
