The painting was painted in 1890. Levitan, like any professional artist, always made sketches before painting the main picture. Many such studies of the lake landscape have been preserved. In his picture Levitan portrayed the uniqueness and versatility of nature. One gets the impression that the foreground dissolves in the picture. Description of Isaac Levitan’s painting "Lake of the Woods
It blurs into the depth of the lake, in which the tops of the trees that surround it are reflected. All the viewer’s attention is drawn to the depth of the painting, that is, its background. Yellow pines, illuminated by the sunset rays, outline the rounded edges of the shore. The author’s use of dark colors, shows all the transparency, beauty and mystery of nature.
On the left edge of the painting, a sandy shore is depicted, which passes evenly into the green grass, as if outlining a narrow line that runs between the water and the shore. The trees are very close and dense near the shore of the lake, as if squeezing it into a peculiar ring. The shores are both gentle and sharply rising and they create a sensation of some rocky plumb-line, which is situated over the water. Pine trees’ trunks are bare and tall with green tops which don’t let the light and sunbeams through, giving the painting some shade and thus receding into the background.
By this the author tried to concentrate the viewer’s attention exactly on the main subject of his painting, which he paid special attention to - to the lake. Everything is accurately and meticulously noted by the author, that you can’t help but wonder about it. The predominance of dark colors, makes it possible to conclude that this is the evening sunset. The faintly blue sky with passing clouds are reflected in the lake. The author wanted to show the viewer all the primordiality and virginity of nature, filling the silence and peace of the forest lake.

My essay about this painting.
The work of the talented Russian artist Isaac Ilyich Levitan is a bright and unique phenomenon in world painting. In his paintings, he sought to reveal the beauty, uniqueness, fullness, and boundlessness of his native nature. Levitans landscapes are striking for their color scheme, richness, transparency, and beauty.
One such work is Forest Lake, painted in 1890. In it, as in many of Levitans works, a true love for the homeland and its unique nature is conveyed. There are many preserved sketches and drafts related to this painting.
Looking at the painting, one gets the impression that the foreground has dissolved. It spreads into a deep lake where reflections of tree tops can be seen. In the middle of the canvas, the lake stretches out like a huge mirror. The background also attracts attention. You can see how the evening sun colored the dense crowns of tall pine trees growing on the shore in a yellow-golden hue. In his work, the author uses a dark color scheme, which gives the composition a charming transparency and an enchanting mystery.
On the left side of the canvas is the shore, smoothly transitioning into green grass, indicating a thin line between the light sand of the coastline and the darker grass further away. And it seems that the lake is compressed in a ring by the trees surrounding it. The shoreline creates the impression of a rocky cliff above the waters surface. The pine trees are tall, with bare trunks and lush green crowns that do not let in light and cast an intricate shadow in the slowly fading rays of the setting sun.
The contradictory mood is due to the contrast in color schemes used by the artist. For a split second, it seems that you are standing on the shore and nothing will disturb this secluded corner. But look to the right at the pitch-black trees, and an inexplicable feeling of unease rises in your chest. It is the solitary pine tree growing at the very edge of the shore that creates this feeling of anxiety.
But when you look forward again, at the sun and light, the anxiety subsides, and faith returns that everything will be fine.
Thus, the artist wanted to draw all attention to the main object of the image, to the lake. The accuracy of the depiction of the forest lake and the surrounding forest, like a frame around a precious stone, very accurately conveys the authors love for his native nature and its beauty, as well as the artistry of the landscape painter Levitan.
Очень красиво, просто очень!

This painting, Forest Lake, depicts a tranquil natural scene. The view is dominated by a calm lake reflecting the surrounding landscape. On the left, a dense forest of tall pine trees with reddish-brown trunks rises from a verdant, sloping bank. The trees are rendered with thick, textured brushstrokes, emphasizing their scale and the ruggedness of the terrain.
Across the lake, a continuous line of forest stretches into the distance, forming a dark, unbroken silhouette against the sky. The trees on the far bank are depicted with a more muted palette, with shades of dark green, blue, and brown, suggesting depth and distance. The reflection of this treeline is visible on the waters surface, creating a symmetrical effect, though slightly distorted.
The water itself is depicted as a pale, luminous expanse, catching the soft, warm light of what appears to be late afternoon or early morning. The sky above is a pale, hazy yellow or off-white, suggesting a gentle, diffused light source, possibly the setting or rising sun. In the foreground, the edge of the lake is bordered by a lower, more densely vegetated bank, with darker, more scrub-like foliage and grasses.
The overall impression of the painting is one of stillness and peace. The artist uses color and light to evoke a sense of atmospheric depth and the quiet beauty of an untouched natural landscape. The subtexts may include themes of:
