Description of Jacques Louis David’s Portrait of Napoleon in his Workroom
The painting was painted in 1812 in oil on canvas.
David is a 19th century artist of genius. His portraits are known throughout the world and rank with the greatest artists. The portrait of Napoleon was painted by David when the period of classicism prevailed in painting.
This depiction of Napoleon is considered to be the most truthful and accurate. The French commander appears to the viewer in his private office. Its interior corresponds to the nature of the owner. Napoleon paid special attention to what should be depicted in his portrait.
All around is furnished with luxurious, expensive furniture with expressive trim elements, a quill and inkwell are present, as well as a Plutarch volume. The sofa, armchair and empire table are very massive, matching the personality for which they were created.
An antique clock that knows how much of Napoleon’s life time is spent working within the walls of this office. The emperor is depicted as a hospitable host who gladly welcomed the artist. He looks solemn, at the expense of his white clothing.
On his chest are his awards. We can also see the folded papers with which the emperor was working before David came to him. A candle burns out, telling us that it was a long night, and Napoleon labored by its light. Certainly from the portrayal of the commander in his office we can be convinced of the artist’s genius.
This work by David was not the only one in which he portrayed the Emperor of France. But it was the final one. Here Napoleon is no longer a young, slightly flabby man, tired from former battles.
David accomplished his task like no other. No artist of the time, could not cope with such a heavy and responsible work. Subsequent artists paid less attention to depicting portraits in the ceremonial style.
The painting is in storage at the Gallery of Art. Washington.

The picture has something of this: people, wear, monarch, royalty, gold, portrait, castle, uniform, military uniform, leader, outfit, furniture, chair, administration, woman, pants.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a man in a military uniform standing in front of a desk with a clock on the wall and a chair.
