Description of Jacques Louis David’s painting "Coronation of Napoleon and Empress Josephine".
The artist worked on the painting for about two years and created a huge canvas. The painter depicted about 150 characters. Each image is realistic and executed with precision, the master painted all the characters from real people.
The artist had long wanted to create a canvas using the theme of the coronation and, after implementing this process, began to work. The client of the work was Napoleon himself.
The artist depicted Josephine and Napoleon. The coronation was blessed by the Pope, who is also present in the painting. The staff is held by the treasurer, a symbol of state administration. Around the Pope is a cardinal, who was not present at all during the event, due to illness.
The artist has reproduced the rite in its entirety by painting the missing characters himself. In the left corner of the canvas are all the emperor’s close relatives. Here are his brothers and sisters, as well as a stepdaughter holding the hand of her son, named after the emperor.
Holding the mantle are the court ladies. Napoleon’s mother is seated on the throne, in the background. She is surrounded by the courtiers, but she was not present at the coronation. It may have been the Emperor’s wish to represent his mother’s presence, for he was very attentive to her. The painting also depicts the painter himself with his pupil.
Despite the realism of the plot, the artist still finished drawing a few characters. Perhaps this work is the embodiment of the wishes of Napoleon himself. After all, for a long time against the coronation of Josephine was a lot of important persons in the state, and as the empress it was not perceived even after the coronation.
The painting was a fantastic success. After the overthrow of Napoleon, the painting was long kept in reserve and never exhibited. Today, the painting continues to be admired and the painter’s accuracy amazes historians. This painting is a kind of historical chronicle.
