In this painting, Neskuchnoye Plowing, we see a vast, rolling landscape dominated by shades of brown, yellow, and muted green, under a sky of soft, diffused light. The central focus is a field being plowed by oxen and figures, creating a swirling dark furrow that cuts across the lighter, cultivated land.
Several teams of oxen, harnessed to plows, are actively engaged in turning over the earth. Human figures, small in comparison to the landscape and the animals, guide the oxen and work the plows. The plowed sections are a deep, rich brown, contrasting sharply with the golden-yellow of the fallow or partially harvested fields surrounding them. In the distance, the landscape stretches out with rolling hills and what appears to be a small, secluded house or estate nestled amongst trees. The sky is broadly rendered with patches of pale blue and soft gray clouds, suggesting a calm, perhaps overcast or early morning/late afternoon atmosphere.
