In this painting, the image of Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible is conveyed in incredible depth. Vasnetsov clearly showed how you can create a portrait of a historical character, so that it is incredibly alive, as deep as possible and very heartfelt. We see the terrible exactly as described by his contemporaries. Most likely, the painter was helped by the fact that he was incredibly close to the work of the people, and therefore knew it well. In the historical songs of the people Ivan the Terrible appears formidable, but incredibly wise.
Description of Victor Vasnetsov’s painting "Tsar Ivan Vasilievich the Terrible".
Most likely Vasnetsov was also influenced by the old buildings from the times of Ivan the Fourth, which impressed him so much in Moscow. Particularly St. Basil’s Cathedral, which expresses the best of the architecture of that era. Most likely, this is what prompted Vasnetsov to think seriously about the personality of the Tsar and the content which was filled with the entire era. Importantly, he reflected on this in a new way.
The painter managed to create a truly majestic image of Ivan the Terrible. This man is distinguished by an incredibly strong will, great strength of mind, determination, sternness, some suspicion, secrecy. All these traits were due to the peculiarities of the era, when there were constant plots and treason. The tsar was above all his entourage, not only in his rank, but also spiritually. We sense how peculiar and significant the personality of Ivan the Terrible is. The hands are incredibly expressive.
The tsar’s figure occupies the entire canvas vertically, as he is depicted standing tall. This is what contributes to the sense of majesty increased to the utmost. The tsar is above his surroundings, dominating it, but at the same time he forms a unified whole with it.
The entire coloring of the painting is incredibly austere and restrained. The attire of the tsar is conveyed with historical accuracy. Architectural background is created by the painter’s imagination.
The painting was completed in 1879.
