Painter: Viktor Vasnetsov
One of the artist’s last masterpieces, the work on which was being done in an alarming atmosphere - at this time, a time of "Balkan Wars," where descendants of Vasnetsov’s bogatyrs-Slavs were fighting against each other, it was becoming apparent that Russia too would soon face a major war. Hence the plot and multicolored, disturbing combination of colors palette of the picture. Sunset dusk, Russian soldiers are moving out of the woods to the field, where, apparently, in the morning they will have a decisive battle.
Description of Victor Vasnetsov’s painting "Bayan"
One of the artist’s last masterpieces, the work on which was being done in an alarming atmosphere - at this time, a time of "Balkan Wars," where descendants of Vasnetsov’s bogatyrs-Slavs were fighting against each other, it was becoming apparent that Russia too would soon face a major war.
Hence the plot and multicolored, disturbing combination of colors palette of the picture. Sunset dusk, Russian soldiers are moving out of the woods to the field, where, apparently, in the morning they will have a decisive battle. Decisive because otherwise the prince would not have brought his young heir: judging by the child’s shirt (without clasps!), visible from under the "adult" caftan, the son of the leader of the Russian soldiers is around seven years old, the age at which in Rus’ exceptional cases a child would only be left under his mother’s care to be raised by his father.
Yes, everything in the picture speaks of the impending decisive battle - the clean clothes of the Prince and his two, apparently, military leaders, the anxiety on their faces, the martial rather than parade armament of the soldiers who keep arriving. Adds anxiety and skillfully "caught" by the artist’s wind (developing beard narrator, clothes frozen listeners), and masterfully put Vasnetsov in the landscape reflection of the dying day.
The painting depicted in red and gray tones, though almost all its characters, with the exception of Bayan, who is not at all in the center of the canvas, are static, make a direct appeal to the imminent danger and the anxiety and determination with which the Russian people are waiting for the battle of tomorrow. But not everything is so gloomy, the symbol of life - a few green twigs on the wind-protected side of the hill - is intended to give the viewer hope. And a bold compositional solution (innovative for those years), placing the hero of the painting, Bayan himself, inspiring the warriors, almost to the right corner, allows us to see determination, replacing anxiety, on the faces of the warriors in the foreground.
The storyteller himself, the keeper of people’s memory, a wise counselor and poet (all these qualities are ascribed to bayans by Russian folklore tradition) is doing his best. It would seem - why? After all, his function before the battle, usually only to cheer up the troops, to give advice to the prince. But, apparently, a truly fateful battle awaits in the morning, and Bayan clearly reminds his listeners of the steadfastness of the Russian land, perhaps also of the tragic defeats, after which these Russian soldiers, who are listening to him now, still continued the seemingly hopeless battle and turned the defeat into a final Victory.
