WHERE IS THE NONSENSE?
Indulging in ambitions leads to a dead end. Life does not respond to their inflamed sprouts within someones soul. Ambition remains unfulfilled, and efforts at self-realization in the external world resemble Sisyphus labor.
Straining his muscles, drenched in sweat, a person becomes sullen as he rolls a metaphysical stone uphill, only to gain nothing. Life is meaningless, he thinks. Life is a mockery, it seems to him.
And then – the growth of ambition within the soul ceases (the best option), and somehow subtly, through a gentle, unfamiliar radiance, an ocean of spirituality spread above us becomes clear – an ocean illuminated by the brightest light of love; and – work acquires new meaning – or a person realizes that the meaning is to do the work well, connecting to this spiritual ocean – and for its sake...
The person changes. He becomes brighter. Perhaps others even notice it, although the person already suspects that there are no others in essence, that everyone is one, because the roots of all lives are in this ocean of love and spirituality. (Try to feel like this on the subway, during rush hour – if you succeed, then something has really shifted within your soul).
But theodicy seems childish to the person already, and although at a theoretical level he does not know how to solve it, but the question – he understands – is posed incorrectly...
The waves of the ocean caress his soul, and he works, and... where is the nonsense here? Absurdity?
You cannot comment Why?
The artist employed a restrained palette dominated by earth tones – ochre, brown, and umber – with accents of blue and red. The clothing consists of layered garments: an under-tunic in a deep blue hue is partially visible beneath a heavier cloak or mantle draped across the shoulders. A small, rectangular patch of red fabric is affixed to the sleeve, possibly indicating a repair or symbolic detail.
The face exhibits a somber expression; the brow is furrowed, and the mouth appears set in a quiet contemplation. The eyes are rendered with a certain intensity, conveying an inward focus rather than direct engagement with the viewer. Theres a sense of profound introspection conveyed through this downward gaze.
The gold background serves to elevate the figure, separating him from the earthly realm and emphasizing his spiritual significance. Its surface is not uniformly smooth; subtle variations in tone suggest a deliberate application intended to create depth and luminosity. The edges of the painting show signs of age and restoration, with areas of paint loss revealing the underlying wood panel.
Subtly, the posture suggests humility and perhaps weariness – a man burdened by thought or experience. The downward gaze might be interpreted as an expression of penitence, reflection on past actions, or a connection to a deeper spiritual understanding. The overall effect is one of quiet dignity and profound inner life, suggesting a figure grappling with weighty matters of faith and conscience.
