The painting depicts two nude women in a natural setting, seemingly by a river or body of water. In the foreground, a woman with dark hair is seated, her body partially obscured by a rock and a draped cloth. She is reaching up to adjust her hair, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. Her skin is rendered with soft, luminous tones. In the background, a second woman stands in the water, facing away from the viewer and looking back over her shoulder. Her posture is more upright, and she appears to be emerging from or entering the water. The background is dominated by dark, lush greens and browns, suggesting foliage and earth. The water is painted with loose, fluid brushstrokes, reflecting the subdued light.
The subtexts of this painting are multifaceted and have been the subject of much art historical discussion.
