In this oval painting, a young woman is depicted in profile, engrossed in reading a book. Her head is tilted downwards, her gaze fixed on the open pages. She has soft, fair skin, rosy cheeks, and her dark hair is elegantly styled, adorned with delicate pink roses. A strand of pearls encircles her neck, and the top of her white garment has slipped to reveal a part of her chest and a single nipple. Her left hand rests delicately on her chin, a gesture of thoughtful concentration, while her right hand holds the book open.
The background is a soft blue, suggesting an airy, perhaps indoor setting. To the right of the woman, a small oil lamp with a golden sheen is perched atop a stack of two books. The lighting from the lamp casts a subtle glow on the womans hand and the book she is reading, creating a sense of intimacy and focus. The overall aesthetic is one of Rococo lightness and elegance.
