The foreground is densely populated with figures engaged in close combat. Fallen soldiers litter the ground, their postures conveying defeat and mortality. The artist has rendered them with a degree of realism that emphasizes the brutality of warfare. Numerous horses are present, some ridden by warriors, others rearing or falling amidst the fray, contributing to the overall sense of disorder and violence.
The central figure on horseback is distinguished by his elaborate helmet and commanding posture. He gestures forward, seemingly urging his troops onward, while simultaneously appearing to assess the situation. The light falls upon him, setting him apart from the surrounding turmoil and suggesting a position of authority or leadership. His attire indicates a higher social status than many of those involved in the fighting.
The color palette is muted, primarily consisting of browns, grays, and ochres, which reinforces the grim atmosphere of battle. The limited use of brighter colors – the red of some banners and uniforms – serves to draw attention to specific points within the composition and heighten the visual drama.
Subtly, the painting conveys a sense of the ephemeral nature of victory and defeat. While one side appears to be gaining ground, the pervasive smoke and obscured landscape suggest uncertainty and potential reversals. The fallen figures serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict, while the tower in the background symbolizes the enduring consequences of war – the loss of structures, stability, and perhaps even hope. The artist seems less interested in celebrating military triumph than in depicting the raw, visceral reality of armed struggle.
