The composition presents a coastal scene rendered in a loose, expressive style. Here we observe a body of water occupying the lower portion of the frame, its surface suggested by undulating lines and washes of blue and purple pigment. These watery forms reflect indistinct shapes above, creating an ambiguous sense of depth and mirroring.
Along the horizon line, a cluster of buildings is discernible, their forms simplified to geometric blocks with hints of yellow and orange suggesting sunlight or artificial illumination. To the left and right of this settlement, vegetation rises – trees are indicated by quick, upward strokes, punctuated by patches of blue that might represent foliage or sky reflected in water. The artist employed a limited palette, primarily relying on blues, purples, yellows, and browns to convey atmosphere and form.
The perspective is somewhat flattened; the foreground and background appear compressed, contributing to an overall sense of immediacy and spontaneity. There’s a deliberate lack of detail, which encourages the viewer to engage actively in constructing meaning from the suggestive marks and color fields. The brushwork appears rapid and gestural, conveying a feeling of observation captured quickly, perhaps during en plein air.
The work seems less concerned with precise representation than with evoking a mood or capturing an impression of place. It’s possible to interpret this as a meditation on the interplay between land, sea, and sky, emphasizing the transient nature of light and atmosphere. The signature, discreetly placed in the lower right corner, anchors the image while maintaining the overall sense of informality.
