The artist employed a limited palette, primarily consisting of deep blues, browns, and ochres, which reinforces the somber mood. The use of broad brushstrokes and flattened perspective contributes to a feeling of visual compression, intensifying the impression of confinement and claustrophobia. Light sources are minimal and diffused, emanating from windows in the buildings lining the street. These pools of illumination do little to dispel the overall darkness; instead, they serve to highlight the figures’ impassivity and emphasize their isolation within the urban landscape.
The architecture visible in the background is rendered with a similar lack of detail, further diminishing any sense of place or specificity. The buildings appear monolithic and oppressive, contributing to the feeling that the individuals are trapped within an impersonal and overwhelming environment. A tall, indistinct structure rises on the right side of the composition, its form echoing the verticality of the figures and adding to the overall impression of rigidity and constraint.
Subtly, a sense of melancholy permeates the work. The absence of overt narrative or emotional display suggests a commentary on the dehumanizing effects of modern urban life. The procession itself could be interpreted as symbolic of conformity and the loss of individuality within a mass society. The muted colors and somber atmosphere evoke feelings of loneliness, resignation, and perhaps even dread. It is not merely a depiction of a street scene; its an exploration of the psychological impact of urban existence on the human spirit.
