Here we see three figures arranged below the cross. To the left stands a woman, enveloped in a halo, her posture suggesting grief and supplication. Her hands are clasped in prayer, and she gazes upwards towards the figure on the cross with an expression of profound sorrow. Adjacent to her is another male figure, also encircled by a halo, who appears to be offering a vessel – perhaps a chalice or container – towards the central figure. His posture conveys reverence and a sense of active participation in the unfolding event.
The artist employed a dense network of lines to create shading and texture, contributing to an overall feeling of dramatic intensity. The cross itself is rendered with meticulous detail, highlighting its rough-hewn construction. The inscription INRI is visible above the figure’s head, adding another layer of theological significance.
Beyond the immediate depiction of suffering and mourning, the drawing seems to explore themes of sacrifice, faith, and divine presence. The dove, a traditional symbol of the Holy Spirit, suggests a spiritual dimension to the event. The inclusion of the two figures – the woman and the man – implies witness and participation in this pivotal moment. Their halos indicate their elevated status within the narrative, possibly representing Mary and St. John the Apostle.
The elaborate border ornamentation serves not only as a decorative element but also functions to isolate the central scene, emphasizing its importance and creating a sense of sacred enclosure. The meticulous cross-hatching throughout the drawing contributes to a heightened emotional impact, conveying both physical pain and spiritual anguish.
