Foregrounded on the left side of the image is what appears to be a human face, rendered with a smooth, almost porcelain-like quality. The features are serene, yet ambiguous; the eyes are closed, suggesting introspection or perhaps a state of slumber. However, this sense of tranquility is immediately disrupted by the presence of several octopus tentacles that emerge from and envelop the face. These appendages curl and twist, obscuring portions of the nose and mouth, creating an unsettling visual tension. The tentacles’ texture contrasts sharply with the smoothness of the skin, adding to the surreal quality of the scene.
The color palette is largely monochromatic, revolving around shades of orange, red, and brown, which contribute to a feeling of warmth but also potentially foreboding. The limited range of colors enhances the dreamlike atmosphere.
Subtextually, the work seems to explore themes of memory, loss, and the subconscious. The closed eyes suggest a connection to the past – a yesterday alluded to in the title – while the octopus tentacles could be interpreted as symbolic representations of repressed emotions or overwhelming memories that threaten to consume the individual. The sailing ships on the horizon might represent journeys taken or opportunities missed, fading into the distance and further reinforcing the sense of nostalgia and regret.
The merging of human and marine elements hints at a deeper connection between humanity and nature, perhaps suggesting an ancient wisdom or primal instinct lurking beneath the surface of consciousness. The overall effect is one of melancholic beauty, inviting contemplation on the complexities of memory and the enduring power of the subconscious mind.
