Painter: Amedeo Modigliani
An Italian sculptor who we also know as a painter, Amedeo was one of the first Italian painters to travel to and from Paris. He was friends with Matisse, Conto, Apollinaire, Picasso. He was known as a hero of Parisian bohemia. However, despite all this, he was not understood. Often his friends in Paris accused Modigliani of being too committed to academism, to the traditional spirit of the Italian museum. His Self-Portrait is painted in the painter’s usual manner - the head looks more like an elongated egg, the neck looks like a cylinder.
Description of the painting "Self-Portrait" by Amedeo Modigliani
An Italian sculptor who we also know as a painter, Amedeo was one of the first Italian painters to travel to and from Paris. He was friends with Matisse, Conto, Apollinaire, Picasso. He was known as a hero of Parisian bohemia. However, despite all this, he was not understood. Often his friends in Paris accused Modigliani of being too committed to academism, to the traditional spirit of the Italian museum.
His Self-Portrait is painted in the painter’s usual manner - the head looks more like an elongated egg, the neck looks like a cylinder. The eyes are more almond-shaped, quite different from those of the real Amadeo. The silhouette, in the tradition of Modigliani, is strongly elongated, further emphasizing the vertical size of the canvas. All proportions of the painting are far from classical. However, the artist has managed to convey his calmness, determination. All the right features the painter always painted as clearly as possible. Contours are not blurred. Rear background perfectly harmonizes with the figure of the author himself. In all rounded corners the artist showed his special stylistic symbols, which revealed to him the emotional content of the nature. He wanted sincerity, expressiveness on the canvas.
Portraits of Modigliani are always characterized by gracefulness of silhouette, the author perfectly manages to show the color transitions, emotions. The canvas seems to reflect the whole world of the depicted person.
"Self-portrait" is painted in oil on canvas, canvas size 64,5x100 centimeters.
