On the left panel, we see an older man seated on a stone ledge. He wears flowing robes and a beard, suggesting wisdom or authority. A lion rests its head upon his lap, a symbolic gesture often associated with Christs dominion over beasts or a representation of strength tamed by faith. Above him, a small structure resembling a pavilion or shelter is nestled amongst the rocks, hinting at refuge or divine presence.
The right panel depicts a warrior on horseback engaged in combat. The knight, clad in armor and wielding a lance, confronts a serpentine creature that writhes upon the ground. The horse itself appears powerful and controlled, its posture conveying both strength and agility. Similar to the left side, the rocky terrain dominates the background, creating a sense of isolation and struggle against a formidable natural environment.
The monochromatic treatment contributes significantly to the work’s solemnity and timelessness. The absence of color directs attention towards the meticulous detailing of the figures and their surroundings. The deep relief carving creates dramatic shadows that enhance the three-dimensionality of the scene, lending it a sculptural quality.
Subtextually, the pairing suggests a narrative duality: one side portraying contemplation and spiritual authority (the seated figure), while the other illustrates active intervention and heroic action (the knight). The shared landscape implies a common context or underlying theme connecting these seemingly disparate events. The rocky setting could symbolize trials, obstacles, or the harshness of life, against which both figures must contend. The lion’s submission to the older man might represent inner peace achieved through faith, while the knights battle signifies an external struggle against evil.
