Flanking the central panel are two additional scenes. On the left, a bearded man stands gesturing outwards, his gaze directed beyond the frame. He is clad in simple garments and appears to be engaged in an act of explanation or proclamation. A small dog sits attentively at his feet, adding a touch of domesticity to the scene. The landscape behind him mirrors that of the central panel, creating visual continuity across the triptych.
The right-hand panel depicts another male figure, older and with long white hair and beard. He is also draped in red fabric, echoing the color scheme of the maternal figure’s attire. His hands are clasped together, suggesting prayer or contemplation. The landscape here again aligns with the others, establishing a unified setting for all three scenes.
The overall effect is one of solemnity and reverence. The repeated use of red suggests themes of sacrifice, royalty, or divine love. The landscapes, while detailed, serve primarily as backdrops, emphasizing the importance of the figures within each panel. The dog’s presence in the left panel introduces a note of earthly companionship, contrasting with the more elevated spiritual tone of the other scenes. The gestures and postures of the individuals invite contemplation on themes of faith, devotion, and familial bonds. The triptychs structure implies that these three moments are interconnected, forming a larger narrative or devotional cycle.
