In the leftmost panel, we observe two figures engaged in animated conversation. One, dressed in formal attire – a dark suit with a high collar – gestures emphatically while addressing a man in simpler clothing. Their interaction appears charged with urgency or perhaps even reprimand. The posture of the figure in the suit suggests authority and disapproval, contrasting sharply with the more relaxed stance of his counterpart.
The central panel depicts a group gathered around a table laden with food baskets. A man, presumably the innkeeper – identified by the inscription as promotavshegosia traktirshchika (a failed innkeeper) – stands prominently, wearing a dark cap and a somewhat worn garment. He seems to be addressing the assembled individuals, his expression difficult to decipher but hinting at defensiveness or perhaps resignation. The presence of several other men, some in military uniforms, suggests a gathering of travelers or soldiers seeking sustenance.
The rightmost panel shows another group of figures, seemingly concluding their meal and preparing to depart. A man in a red coat appears to be settling accounts with the innkeeper. This scene reinforces the sense of a transient population passing through this establishment.
Beneath each panel runs Cyrillic text – likely verses or commentary related to the depicted scenes. The inscription at the bottom identifies the date as May 31, 1838 and names the artist as B.I. Pomoransky, along with the location of creation: Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg.
The subtexts within this work are layered. Beyond a simple depiction of daily life in an inn, theres a discernible commentary on social standing and economic hardship. The failed innkeeper figure becomes a focal point – a man whose circumstances have led him to this position, perhaps reflecting broader societal anxieties about poverty and opportunity. The formal attire of the man in the leftmost panel suggests a critique of those who hold power or authority, while the military presence hints at the pervasive influence of the state.
The color palette is dominated by earthy tones – browns, greens, and yellows – which contribute to the overall sense of realism and authenticity. The artists use of light and shadow creates depth within the scene, highlighting key figures and adding a degree of drama. Overall, the work offers a glimpse into a specific moment in time, capturing not only the physical setting but also hinting at the social and economic realities that shaped it.
