Description of Mikhail Vrubel’s painting The Girl on a Persian Carpet
Girl on the Background of a Persian Carpet is one of the beautiful works of the famous artist Mikhail Vrubel.
The viewer is presented with a colorful, vivid painting. In the center of the canvas is a young girl, looking like she is 12-13 years old. The girl is of oriental nationality, she has dark skin, dark eyes and long black hair.
The girl is wearing a bright, colorful satin dress - it is overloaded with both color and shape, which is characteristic of the Roma national dress for the most part. The whole picture is filled with rather gloomy light - this is due to the fact that due to violations of the technique of drying the paints on the canvas over time they have darkened and faded.
Behind the girl’s back hangs a large and bright Persian rug. It is embroidered with oriental patterns and flowers. The rug is very large, it lies heavy folds on the floor, on which the girl sits.
The girl’s hair is curly, it is not in her hair but falls easily and freely on the shoulders of the child. The girl has dark, bushy eyebrows and big eyes with thick eyelashes. The girl’s face expresses sadness and fatigue.
On the child’s neck are several heavy strands of pearls, which in several coils wrap around the thin young neck. Under the weight of these beads, it seems that her neck is about to break.
The child’s hands are adorned with expensive large rings and rings with natural stones. Such jewelry is disproportionate to the girl’s age; she looks deliberately luxurious and utterly ridiculous.
The girl’s hands are folded so that one of them covers a pink rose, a symbol of love. Her arms are crossed at her hips, and the girl’s other hand holds a dagger richly decorated with precious and semi-precious stones-the inevitable symbol of death. The girl herself is an unalterable symbol of life, as a child for whom life is yet to come, and as a woman within whom a new life will one day be born.

The background itself is intensely decorative – an elaborate tapestry or carpet of deep reds, oranges, and blacks, teeming with floral motifs. This dense pattern creates a sense of enclosure and opulence, almost overwhelming the figure’s presence. The texture appears layered and complex, suggesting both depth and a degree of visual chaos that contrasts with the girls stillness.
The young woman is dressed in an ornate gown, its fabric shimmering with gold embroidery. A string of pearls adorns her neck, further emphasizing her privileged status. Her dark hair frames her face, softening some of the severity of her expression. The lighting is subdued, casting shadows that accentuate the contours of her features and contribute to a mood of quiet drama.
Subtly, theres an ambiguity in the portrayal. While the luxurious setting and attire suggest wealth and comfort, the girl’s downcast eyes and somber demeanor hint at underlying sadness or perhaps a sense of confinement. The rose she holds could symbolize innocence, beauty, or even fleeting mortality. The overwhelming nature of the background might be interpreted as representing societal expectations or the weight of tradition, pressing in on her individuality.
The painting evokes a feeling of restrained emotion and quiet contemplation, inviting viewers to consider the complexities of identity within a context of privilege and potential constraint.
