The painting depicts the Adoration of the Magi, a biblical scene where three wise men visit the newborn Jesus. In the foreground, one Magus, dressed in a green robe, kneels before the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus, presenting a golden chalice. Mary, in a blue robe covered by a pink mantle, gently holds the baby, who appears to be reaching for the chalice. Behind them, another Magus, in a pink robe and an elaborate headdress, carries a golden vessel. The third Magus, with dark skin and dressed in a white and richly patterned garment, stands to the right, holding a golden monstrance.
The scene takes place in a humble stable, with a cow and a donkey visible in the background, common elements in nativity scenes symbolizing the presence of animals at Jesus birth. Two figures, possibly shepherds or onlookers, are seen peering from within the stable. Above the stable, a radiating star, the Star of Bethlehem, shines brightly, signifying the divine guidance that led the Magi.
The background opens up to a distant landscape with a city skyline featuring spires and a church, suggesting a contemporary setting for this biblical event. Sheep graze in a field, adding to the pastoral feel of the scene. A solitary bird is perched on the dilapidated roof of the stable, and another is visible in an opening in the wall.
The subtexts of the painting are richly layered:
