Understanding elevates the viewer to the artists point of view. Wassily Kandinsky.
WHAT IS HIDDEN IN THE TITLE YELLOW – RED – BLUE?
All excerpts are taken from Kandinskys theoretical work, Concerning the Spiritual in Art.
The color yellow... is like a person full of aspirations and energy, for whom external circumstances prevent them from expressing themselves. Yellow is typically an earthly color.
The color red, despite all its energy and intensity, creates a certain impression of almost purposeful, boundless power. In this boiling and burning – mainly within oneself and very little externally – there exists what is called masculine maturity.
The color blue is a solemn color, of supra-earthly depth. This should be understood literally: on the path to this supra lies the earthly, which cannot be avoided. All torments, questions, contradictions of the earthly must be experienced. No one has yet avoided them.
Lets try to answer the question: what is hidden in the title?
Yellow – a person full of aspirations and energy.
Red – in whom there exists masculine maturity.
Blue – experiencing torments, questions, contradictions of the earthly, which must be experienced.
I have not found information that Kandinskys iconic work Yellow – Red – Blue is his abstract self-portrait, so I want to share my version. In abstraction, I see a portrait. The neck (a straight line parallel to the sides of the painting) and from it the chin, mouth, nose, forehead, the left eye surrounded by a red eyeglass frame, five protruding eyelashes of the right eyelid, and three rounded (curly) strands of hair on the top of the head, the back of the head with six protruding hairs. The portrait is completed by an elegant collar – a truncated part of a circle.
The artist depicted a man wearing glasses with curly hair.
Who is this person?
A person full of aspirations and energy, in whom there exists masculine maturity, experiencing torments, questions, contradictions of the earthly, which must be experienced, wearing glasses and with curly hair – the author of the abstract work Yellow – Red – Blue, Vasily Vasilyevich Kandinsky!
Yellow – Red – Blue is an abstract self-portrait by Kandinsky.
You cannot comment Why?
This painting, Yellow-Red-Blue by Wassily Kandinsky, is a vibrant and dynamic abstract composition characterized by a rich interplay of colors and geometric shapes.
What I see:
The canvas is filled with a symphony of abstract forms. Dominant in the center is a large, bright yellow rectangular shape, almost like a monumental structure, with a circular element at its apex. To its left, a sharp, thin red line pierces diagonally across a field of softer blues and purples. A striking black circle with a red outline sits near the yellow form, creating a focal point.
As the eye moves to the right, the composition becomes more complex and layered. Intersecting planes of red, blue, green, and yellow form a kind of fragmented, geometric nebula, with sharp angles and overlapping shapes. A bold, sinuous black line snakes through this area, adding a sense of movement and energy. Small squares filled with checkered patterns in red and blue appear in this section, offering tiny moments of intense color and detail.
The background is a wash of soft, ethereal colors – yellows, purples, and blues – that provide a luminous backdrop for the more defined forms. Several circles of varying sizes and colors (black, gray, yellow) are scattered across the canvas, adding to the celestial or cosmic feel of the work. Lines are used extensively, both thin and straight, and thick and curved, to define shapes, create movement, and connect different elements.
Subtexts:
Kandinskys work is deeply rooted in his theories about synesthesia and the spiritual in art. He believed that colors and forms could evoke specific emotions and spiritual states, much like music.
In essence, Yellow-Red-Blue is not meant to depict anything specific in the external world but rather to create an emotional and spiritual experience for the viewer through the abstract language of color, form, and line, akin to the powerful, non-representational impact of music.
