In the upper register of the left panel, a regal figure in crimson robes stands beside a long, slender staff. Below her, a recumbent animal rests on the ground, its form rendered with a degree of naturalism that contrasts with the stylized drapery of the standing woman. The background is a pale, almost monochromatic space, contributing to an ethereal quality.
The upper register of the right panel mirrors the left in structure but diverges significantly in content. Here, another figure dressed in dark green stands before what appears to be a large wheel or cart. This element introduces a sense of labor and potential hardship, contrasting with the more serene posture of the woman. The background again remains largely undefined, maintaining an atmosphere of detachment.
The lower register of both panels depicts a grouping of figures. In the left panel, three individuals are clustered together; one figure in black robes stands slightly apart, while two others – one clad in red and another in pale pink – appear to be engaged in a tender interaction. The expressions on their faces are difficult to discern precisely, but there is an impression of quiet devotion or contemplation.
The right panel’s lower section shows a man in orange garments carrying a child on his shoulders. He holds a staff, suggesting authority or guidance. His stance conveys movement and purpose, contrasting with the stillness of the figures above. The ground beneath him is rendered with more detail than the backgrounds, hinting at a connection to earthly concerns.
Subtleties within the work suggest layers of meaning beyond the immediately visible. The presence of the animals in the upper registers could symbolize fidelity or temptation, while the wheel on the right panel might allude to cycles of life and death or divine judgment. The grouping in the lower left panel evokes themes of familial love and spiritual connection, whereas the figure carrying a child in the lower right panel may represent protection, responsibility, or even prophecy.
The overall effect is one of solemnity and contemplation. The limited color range, combined with the stylized figures and architectural framing, creates an atmosphere that invites quiet reflection on matters of faith and human experience.
