Painter: Pieter Brueghel The Elder
Location: Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit.
There are only a few known versions of The Wedding Dance, but this one, due to the level of pictorial technique, is considered the best. The painting illustrates the merriment that reigns among the 125 wedding guests. Almost the entire space of the painting is occupied by the dancers, among whom you can find the bride. It’s a girl with puffy hair and wearing a black dress. This color corresponds to the traditions of the time in which the picture was painted.
Description of Peter Brueghel’s painting "The Wedding Dance"
There are only a few known versions of The Wedding Dance, but this one, due to the level of pictorial technique, is considered the best.
The painting illustrates the merriment that reigns among the 125 wedding guests. Almost the entire space of the painting is occupied by the dancers, among whom you can find the bride. It’s a girl with puffy hair and wearing a black dress. This color corresponds to the traditions of the time in which the picture was painted. While in the Middle Ages dancing was considered a sin, in this painting it serves as a ritual. While it is not difficult to identify the bride, it seems impossible to find the groom.
A little further away, between the trees, there is a cloth on which hangs a wedding crown. Ditches are dug in the left side of the picture. They are present here as tables and chairs for guests. Breughel’s characteristic, which he endowed almost all of his works with, is also present in this painting: the figures are executed in the style of satire.
In Bruegel’s The Wedding Dance there are noticeable references to voyeurism. This refers to the depiction of people kissing and embracing. The artist depicted the men in the foreground in an excited state. This becomes apparent by looking at the codpiece of the men.
Researchers believe that The Wedding Dance of 1556 belongs to a series of three paintings by Brueghel. The series also includes "Peasant Dance" and "Peasant Wedding."
For several centuries, art historians thought the painting was lost. Until William Valentiner, director of the Art Institute in Detroit, found it at a sale in London. Today the canvas is a valuable museum exhibit.
