Painter: Ilya Repin
Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Государственная Третьяковская галерея).
Despite his many genre-complex works, Repin often created portraits just for the soul. Particularly striking among his canvases. Depicting members of his family, cheerful image of the daughter of the master. In 1884, while in the Pens (not far from St. Petersburg), where his favorite country house was located, the artist creates a canvas with the amusingly named "Dragonfly" (posed by his daughter Verochka). As a rule, children always frolic and have fun, so Repin often had to be a witness, his wonderful girl, sitting on a crossbeam, wiggling her legs, like a dragonfly on a stalk.
Description of Ilya Repin’s painting The Dragonfly
And at one point, he decided to capture the children’s mischief on canvas.
It even turned out very funny. In the center of the canvas, we see a girl in a hat sitting at ease on a wooden crossbar. Her silhouette is illuminated by the warm rays of the sun, they give a cheerful coloring, a play of light and shadow to the story.
The painting seems to radiate a mass of childish energy, spontaneity and curiosity. It seems that the girl is not sitting in one place, just the slightest chance to run away. While working on the picture the author is particularly attracted by her carefree and mischievous nature, accurately emphasized on the canvas as the main features of the child’s character. At the bottom of the canvas Repin draws lonely grasses, indistinctly projecting against the expanse of air that gently hides the horizon.
On this canvas the artist accurately reflects the spontaneity and liveliness in the child’s character, which imperceptibly takes the viewer into the carefree world of childhood. Probably, when creating such portraits, he allowed himself a break from complex large works, just enjoying life among his family and especially children.
Now this picture can be seen in the permanent exposition of the Tretyakov Gallery.

Ну так то вроде норм)
Among the portraits by I. E. Repin, a special group can be distinguished by portraits of the artists family members. He experimented extensively in these works because he painted them for himself. One of the most famous such portraits is The Dragonfly, painted by the artist at his dacha near St. Petersburg in 1884. In the portrait, Repin depicted his eldest daughter, Vera Repina.
The painting gives the impression of a domestic scene, accidentally observed by the author. The composition of the canvas is extremely simple. We see a girl who, cheerfully swinging her legs, is sitting on a high railing of a picket fence. She really resembles a dragonfly sitting on a flower and fluttering its transparent wings. The girls pose is natural and free, full of liveliness and mischief. It seems that this little rascal will soon slip down and run away cheerfully.
A hat, amusingly fastened with a ribbon under the chin, a serious-mischievous look in her dark eyes, sunbeams on her face and neck – all these details add immediacy to her appearance, drawing us into the world of childrens games and dreams. The artist openly admires the unpretentiousness and charm of this young creature, her carefree joy of life.
The entire space in the painting – both the air itself and the colorful dress of the girl, with its light folds – seems to be imbued with sunlight. Behind the child is a clear summer sky, slightly veiled by white clouds. At the bottom of the canvas, delicate dry blades of grass are barely outlined with a thin brush. The painting is quite active in terms of color, but the shades are pastel and delicate.
Stylistically, The Dragonfly differs from most of Repins paintings. Both the technique of painting and the interpretation of the image, as well as the feeling of fleetingness of what is happening here, very much resemble impressionistic styles. In this painting, Repin managed to create an image that contains a lot of warmth, tenderness, and love.

The title Dragonfly (Painters daughter portrait) introduces a layer of subtext. The dragonfly, often associated with change, transformation, and adaptability, could allude to the girls stage of life or the ephemeral nature of childhood. It might also symbolize a sense of freedom or lightness, perhaps reflected in the girls pose and the open sky. The fact that it is a portrait of the painters daughter suggests an intimate and personal connection to the subject, hinting at themes of parental love, observation, and the capturing of a specific moment in time. The girls slightly distant gaze and the shadow on her face could imply a sense of introspection or, conversely, a youthful innocence that is not fully revealing. The overall impression is one of quiet contemplation and the beauty of a fleeting moment captured through the eyes of an artist.
