In the upper right quadrant of the painting, three angelic figures dominate the composition. The central figure, a winged female embodying virtue, is adorned with a radiant sun on her chest, signifying enlightenment and goodness. She holds a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and achievement. To her left, another female figure represents nobility, holding a scepter, a symbol of authority and power. She is draped in flowing golden fabric, emanating opulence and status. A cherubic figure, possibly representing youth or innocence, clings to the lower part of nobility, underscoring the connection between lineage and virtue. Small putti are scattered throughout the sky; one is seen near nobility, and another is partially visible in the lower right.
In stark contrast, the lower left side of the painting features a dark, earthbound female figure, clearly representing ignorance or vice. She is depicted falling backward, her limbs flailing, draped in a dark blue cloth that suggests oppression or suffering. Her face conveys anguish or defeat. A winged demon or evil spirit, a cherubic figure with dark bat-like wings, is shown clinging to her, attempting to drag her down further. This figure represents the negative forces associated with ignorance. The presence of dark bats also contributes to the malevolent imagery on this side of the composition. A single red rose, symbolizing beauty and perhaps lost innocence, floats near the fallen figure. Another angelic figure with a trumpet is blowing a blast, possibly signifying a proclamation of triumph or a warning.
The painting is framed by an ornate, scalloped border, decorated with intricate patterns and small putti figures, which enhances the illusionistic aerial perspective. The overall composition creates a dynamic contrast between light and dark, ascent and descent, signifying the eternal struggle and ultimate triumph of virtue, nobility, and enlightenment over ignorance and vice. The Rococo style is evident in the pastel color palette, the delicate brushwork, the asymmetrical composition, and the graceful, often playful, depiction of the figures.
