Composition

Before us is a work by the famous Russian painter Konstantin Egorevich Makovsky. In his work, the artist addressed a wide range of themes. We can find portraits, genre paintings, and depictions of historical events in his oeuvre. But, in my opinion, the canvases depicting natural phenomena and events from everyday life, as well as ordinary people, are particularly captivating. One such example is Children Running Away from a Thunderstorm, which combines a sketch of nature with an image of rural childrens appearances, and reflects human feelings and emotions. When considering this work, one almost sees the events leading up to the captured moment, and you begin to empathize with its characters, as if together with them, you find yourself in this meadow during a thunderstorm.

In the painting, we see a rural landscape that is appealing for its realism. The lush meadow grasses, the forest visible in the distance, the shallow river flowing through dense vegetation, and the thin, fragile bridge spanning this river are all depicted. On the bridge stands a village girl. She is barefoot, wearing a light dress. Her hair has been tousled by the wind. We see that she herself is not very old, but she carries her younger brother on her shoulders, and she hurries to shelter both of them from the approaching thunderstorm.

It seems that the children were gathering mushrooms or berries in the forest – the girl is carrying a basket. Perhaps they were already heading home when a storm caught up with them on the road. Its likely that the village is still far away, and there is no nearby shelter where they could hide and wait out the downpour.

The thunderstorm is getting closer. The sky is covered with gray storm clouds from which rain will soon fall. And it promises to be heavy: there are no clearings in the sky, not a single ray of sunshine. A cold wind bends the grass and chills you to the bone through your light clothing. The girl looks at the sky with apprehension: perhaps she has seen flashes of lightning or heard rumbles of thunder. There is anxiety in her eyes. After all, itt scary and dangerous to be in an open field during a thunderstorm. However, she is more worried about her younger brother, for whom she is responsible. The boy is very young. He is even more frightened by the approaching flashes and terrifying rumbles of thunder. He may not yet know what a thunderstorm is or how dangerous it can be. But he is very scared. After all, everything has become so dark around, and the black storm clouds are hanging so low! They need to get home as soon as possible. But he feels: his sister will save him. He hugs her tightly with his tiny hands and presses against his sister with his whole little body.

The artist emphasized the tension of the plot through a skillful combination of gloomy, saturated dark colors, which create an anxious atmosphere, conveying the danger of the situation in which these two children find themselves. The impression is enhanced by the fact that the painting seems to be filled with movement, both of the elements and of the children striving to escape the storm, trying to outrun it.

This painting by K. E. Makovsky made a strong impression on me. And I believe that his work rightfully occupies a worthy place in the ranks of great Russian masters of art.

Подошвы большие у девочки потому, что крестьяне ходили большую часть босиком и нога, естественно, была больше, чем у китаянок, которые их в тисках держали, чтобы размер ноги был малюсенький.

А где там братик? Две девочки, однако....
